Across Patagonia’s Ice
El Calafate

Where ice has long shaped both, landscape and human experience — from Patagonia’s pioneering inhabitants, who first traced and defined the limits of this remote territory, to the explorers who continue to seek it out today — drawn by a landscape in constant motion. In El Calafate, the terrain unfolds in cycles that stretch beyond human time, yet are felt in every moment of encounter.

At the threshold of the Patagonian steppe, where distances stretch and the horizon begins to fracture into ice, El Calafate emerges as a gateway to a landscape shaped not only by scale, but by motion.

Here, within Los Glaciares National Park, more than a hundred glaciers descend from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, advancing, retreating, and breathing as living masses. Among them, the imposing Glaciar Perito Moreno stands as both icon and anomaly—one of the few advancing glaciers on Earth—its surface cracking, shifting, and collapsing in a constant display of force.

Where Pioneer
Spirit Lives_

Here, families from distant parts of the world once arrived and chose to remain — drawn not by ease, but by possibility. Europeans, criollos, and wanderers of uncertain origin learned to read the land through wind, water, and season, shaping lives in dialogue with isolation and vastness. What began as settlement became continuity: a way of inhabiting defined by resilience, adaptation, and quiet determination.

To remain here, even briefly, is to step into that legacy — to understand that this landscape was not only discovered, but lived, interpreted, and sustained across generations. In the presence of such scale, human stories do not disappear; they endure, subtly woven into the fabric of Patagonia itself.

The Adventure Begins

  • A full-day visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier unfolds as a direct encounter with one of Patagonia’s most dynamic ice landscapes. The journey begins crossing the steppe toward Los Glaciares National Park, where the first views of the glacier reveal an immense wall of moving ice suspended between water and sky.

From the network of walkways, the glacier is observed in constant transformation: deep blue crevasses, shifting seracs, and the distant sound of ice fracturing into Lago Argentino. Each viewpoint offers a different reading of its scale and motion.

The experience continues on the ice itself, where guided trekking allows for a slow progression across its surface. Crampons engage with the glacier’s texture, revealing melt channels, fissures, and crystalline formations shaped by pressure and time. Walking on the Perito Moreno Glacier becomes an immersion into a living system, where silence, movement, and vastness redefine perception.

  • The Spirit of the Glaciers is an expedition that explores nature in depth to unfold the true essence of This Patagonian region. Sailing aboard the elegant and exclusive M/V Santa Cruz, specially designed for this journey, the experience combines high-end comfort and refined cuisine, creating a quiet sense of immersion within one of the world’s most remote landscapes.

  • The Santa Cruz River traces the route of one of Patagonia’s most iconic explorers: Charles Darwin. By kayak, this journey retraces his passage through vast steppe and glacial valleys, revealing striking geological formations and a rich presence of wildlife—elements that once shaped his understanding of this territory. Movement on the water becomes a way of reading the landscape as he once did: slowly, attentively, and in direct contact with scale.

  • This horseback expedition crosses the Reserva Natural Estancia 25 de Mayo, where the immensity of the Patagonian steppe unfolds in cañadones, streams, and open horizons. Guided by the traditions of southern gauchos, the route carries stories embedded in the land itself. The experience culminates with a traditional country-style lunch at the Cueva del Arroyo, where landscape and culture meet in a shared moment of shelter and silence.

  • We will depart in a 4×4 vehicle for 9.5 km, ascending through the Feruglio mountain range toward a panoramic viewpoint over the former domain of Glaciar Upsala.

From this elevated edge, we will contemplate the traces of time carved into the landscape, where glaciers once shaped the earth with immense force, leaving behind visible scars as they gradually recede.

Along the route, the terrain reveals its deep geological memory: exposed marine fossils scattered across a striking deep-red canyon known as Cañadón de Los Fósiles, a silent archive of ancient seas and shifting continents.

  • For this ride, experience controlling horse and self is required essential here. Our guide will evaluate each guest’s riding knowledge to determine suitability for the journey and ensure safety and comfort throughout the experience process.

We’ll begin the ride heading northeast, crossing the Caterina River Valley, observing typical Patagonian steppe vegetation, and ascending trails among ñire and lenga forests gradually rising. We’ll cross terrain paved by pioneers. We’ll pause at Cascada de Los Perros, a place to rest with panoramic views of Estancia Valley and Lago Pearson along here.
Then we’ll ascend western slopes of Cerro Mesón until reaching Cristina Lookout, where we’ll have lunch above the valley. We’ll relish majestic views of surrounding peaks, the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, and Glaciar Upsala, all within a comforting silence around here.
